The central character in this story is based on the Dublin crime reporter Veronica Guerin. In the 1990's, drugs blighted large sections of Dublin as drug addiction gripped many of the young and unemployed and made the crime bosses rich and powerful. The police were unprepared for the onslaught of crime that followed and crippled by laws that favored the criminal. Guerin said she could see change in the faces of Dublin. A people famous for their friendly and generous nature were becoming hard and cynical before her eyes. If the characters did not have Irish accents and the cars did not have the steering wheels on the right, these streets and characters could be mistaken for those of any poor section of any large US city.
