The Irish in Film
A Complete List of Irish Films

 Title  Only the Lonely
There is a long-standing tradition in some Irish families that one son stays home to take care of Mamma. This son sacrifices his ambitions for the betterment of his family. And, as we see in this film, he may not know he is playing this role until it is too late to create a life of his own. The son is a Chicago cop who wishes to marry. In this worst-case scenario, the mother uses her tungsten-steel apron strings to manipulate every situation, making it even more difficult for the son to break away.
Anthony Quinn, famous for playing Zorba the Greek, plays another Greek character here. Mr. Quinn was half Mexican and half Irish, hence the Irish name.
