In the 1930s bootlegging brought Boston mobsters south to Florida in search of Cuban rum. Irish mobsters competed with Italian and Cuban mobsters for control of distribution, taking over trade routes, city blocks and nightclubs. Yet, it was never enough. Branching out into gambling was the next step. Then prohibition ended and people's thirsts could be quenched elsewhere. Funny how forbidden fruit seems so much sweeter. See also: Road to Perdition.
