Original book
"The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne"
by Brian Moore

The Irish in Film
A Complete List of Irish Films

Title  The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne
This is a story of a repressed Irish woman who never really blossomed. Yet, though far past her prime, she still clings to hope for some sort of social life. The original book sets the story in Belfast and is unabashed about bashing the repressive nature of religion both Catholic and Protestant. Here the story is set in Dublin and the title character is older and thus farther from the romantic love life she craves. This British made film, cast with British actors, makes it just that: a British film. It does not capture the Irishness of the characters, though it does capture their desperate longings.
