 Title  Jimmy's Hall
Based on the play, this film tells the true story of Jimmy Gralton. Gralton founded a communal arts center for dancing, art, singing, poetry and boxing, in 1932, just after the Irish Civil war. After its initial success, it was shut down and Gralton left for America. The center had not originated from the church, but from the people, or as the clergy saw them: communists and atheists. Later, when he returned he tried once more to open the center. The church couldn't stand competition. Though the local people loved him, the authorities feared him and shut down the hall, again. The locals organized a letter writing campaign, but to no avail. And, when Gralton (now an American citizen) defied them, his reward was being the only man ever deported from Ireland.
