Original Story

The Irish in Film
A Complete List of Irish Films

 Title  Guests of the Nation
The story is set in 1921, during the Easter Rebellion, a war against the occupying British that would lead to the establishment of the Irish Free State. The longstanding British/Irish rivalry is shown through the relationship between two rebel Irish soldiers and their two English soldier captives. As you would expect, there is some animosity toward the captives. The longer the hostages remain, however, the greater the kinship bond between the four becomes. Though the original story and subsequent play were written by Irish writers, the sympathy toward the English is clear. The two Brits are nice guys from poor families used by the Empire to further the cause of 'capitalism.' You end up feeling sorry for them, for at least the Irish are fighting for their own and not for others' greed. Link to reviews Click picture
